So close, yet gone: Ukraine's Svitolina falls in tense duel at Wimbledon

Ukraine's top tennis player, Elina Svitolina, has ended her run at the 2025 Wimbledon tournament.
Match details
In the third round, the Ukrainian athlete was defeated by Belgium's Elise Mertens, who currently holds the 23rd position in the world rankings.
The match ended with a score of 6:1, 7:6(4) in favor of Mertens. The encounter lasted 1 hour and 41 minutes.
This was the ninth head-to-head match between the two players. Until now, Svitolina held the advantage, with five wins to three.
However, this time Mertens confidently outplayed the Ukrainian, taking just one break but capitalizing on key moments in the second set.
In the next round, the Belgian will face the winner of the match between world number one Aryna Sabalenka and Britain's Emma Raducanu (WTA 40).
How Svitolina performed
On her way to the third round, Elina defeated Anna Bondar of Hungary (WTA 75) in the opening round. She then easily overcame Belarusian player Aliaksandra Sasnovich (WTA 107).
Following Svitolina's loss, only Dayana Yastremska remains among Ukrainian players in the Wimbledon singles draw. On July 5, she will play her third-round match against Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.
