Smell of old age: Sientists figured out its origin and how to eliminate it
From elderly individuals and within their homes, a scent often emerges over time, commonly referred to as an old age smell. It is mistakenly attributed to poor hygiene and the elderly's inability to maintain household cleanliness. However, the reality is quite different, as scientists have explained why.
Journal of Investigative Dermatology explains the origins of the elderly odor and methods to alleviate it.
Where does the smell of old age come from?
The specific smell often associated with aging can appear in individuals or their homes as early as 40 years old, not necessarily during old age.
According to research, over time, the skin produces 2-nonenal, an unsaturated aldehyde with an unpleasant, fatty, and grassy odor. This chemical compound forms through the oxidation of omega-7 unsaturated fatty acids and contributes to the distinctive smell. As people age, particularly during the aging process, the concentration of this compound increases.
Around the age of 40, both men and women start to produce more fatty acids as their natural antioxidant defenses gradually deteriorate and decrease.
Hormonal changes in the body, such as menopause, can accelerate this chemical process. Because 2-nonenal is not water-soluble, it can remain on the skin despite thorough washing and the use of fragrant products.
Therefore, 2-nonenal accumulates over time on surfaces, fabrics, and clothing, contributing to the specific smell in indoor spaces. This odor persists on skin and fabrics even after hygiene routines and washing.
Is it possible to get rid of the smell of old age?
Scientists claim that yes, it is indeed possible to eliminate and minimize the smell associated with aging. This can be achieved by maintaining a healthy lifestyle and hygiene practices - regular physical exercise, quitting smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, proper nutrition, maintaining hydration, oral hygiene, and dental care.
One Japanese skincare brand asserts that they have found a plant-based combination effective against 2-nonenal odor. This combination includes persimmon and green tea.
Tannins in persimmon extract help break down and wash away 2-nonenal, while antioxidants in Japanese green tea detoxify the skin and continue to provide a deodorizing effect.
