On Sunday, January 12, a Slovak parliamentary delegation left for Russia on a business visit. It consists of the representatives of two political unions: Smer – sociálna demokracia (SMER-SD) and Slovenská národná strana (SNS). The parties will discuss gas supplies, TASR informs.

The delegation was headed by the Deputy Speakers of the Slovak Parliament Andrej Danko (SNS party) and Tibor Gašpar (SMER-SD party). The delegation also included MPs Marian Carey, Ján Mažgút, Richard Glück (all from Smer-SD), and Adam Lučanský (SNS).

Since the Poles have banned flights over their territory, the delegation's flight has been re-routed and will fly over the Czech Republic and Germany.

“I don't understand Poland's position, but I accept it as reality,” Danko said.

According to a previous statement by Danko and Gašpar, the Slovak delegation is expected to meet with representatives of the Russian parliament and discuss some government issues.

What will they discuss?

Gašpar said that the delegation wants to know whether Russian Gazprom will be able to deliver gas to Slovakia despite the suspension of transit from Ukraine. He also believes that the war on the Ukrainian territory should be on the agenda of the talks.

Before the flight, Danko said that he wanted to bring information, for example, about life in Russia.

“I want to show that people also live there, that Germans, French, and Americans do business there,” he said.

The parliamentary delegation is due to return from Russia on Wednesday, January 15.

The other day, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said that Russian leader Vladimir Putin had promised that Gazprom would find alternative ways to supply gas to the Slovak state. However, it is not yet known how the gas will be supplied.

On January 1, Ukraine stopped transiting Russian gas to Europe, as the contract expired and the country decided not to renew it.
