Shooting occurs at polling station in Türkiye, one victim and many wounded
In Türkiye, in the village of Diyarbakir in the Agaclidere district, a dispute between the voters at a polling station escalated into a fight with shooting. The incident left one dead and more than ten people injured, reports Hurriyet.
It is noted that the dispute that arose during the local elections escalated into a fight with the use of stones and sticks, as well as guns.
A 44-year-old man died of bullet wounds in the hospital. According to the latest reports, there are also 12 wounded, two of them in serious condition.
"While medical teams were unable to arrive at the scene because of the fight, gendarmerie reinforcement teams were sent to the scene," the newspaper writes.
As it turned out later, the deceased was an official election representative of the DEM party.
Law enforcement officers closed the village where the tragedy occurred for entry and exit.
DHA journalists Burak Emek and Giyasettin Tetik were also attacked. They tried to protect themselves by getting into an ambulance. However, a bullet hit the wheel of the car in which the media representatives were traveling. Two other ambulances were also damaged.
The local governor's office said that more than a hundred gendarmerie officers were working in the area of the incident, and a helicopter was also used.
As a reminder, local elections began in Türkiye on March 31. They are taking place in 81 provinces.
Also, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has recently stated that the March local elections will be the last in his political career.
