On Monday, May 4, a shooting occurred near the White House in Washington. It happened while US President Donald Trump was speaking at a small business summit, according to Reuters, a post from the US Secret Service on X, and a White House broadcast.
Initially, reports of a shooting near the White House appeared in the media, but they were almost immediately confirmed by the US Secret Service.
"U.S. Secret Service personnel are on the scene of an officer-involved shooting at 15th Street and Independence Avenue in Washington, D.C. One individual was shot by law enforcement; their condition is currently unknown," the statement read.
After that, the White House was briefly locked down, Reuters reports.
The Washington, D.C. police department said officers were on the scene conducting an investigation.
"The scene is secure. Avoid the area as roads will be closed for several hours," police said.
At the time of the shooting, the White House YouTube channel was broadcasting Donald Trump giving a speech at the small business summit. And from all appearances, he was speaking inside the White House building itself.
Other incidents
Reuters notes that law enforcement in the nation's capital has been on heightened alert in recent days following a shooting at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner.
On the night of April 26, a dinner was held at the Washington Hilton, attended by Trump, his wife, other administration officials, and journalists. Some 2,600 people were at the event.
During that event, an armed man tried to breach a security checkpoint, after which gunfire erupted. He reportedly wounded an officer, but the officer's bulletproof vest fortunately saved him.
The attacker was identified as 31‑year‑old Cole Thomas Allen, a California resident who works as a teacher.
Back to that event: immediately after the shooting, Trump and other officials were rushed out of the hotel, and the event itself was postponed. A new date has not yet been announced.
