On Sunday, a 22-year-old veteran of the Ukrainian Armed Forces was brought to a hospital in Kharkiv. He suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen after being shot by a stranger with a pistol, local media and the Kharkiv Regional Police report.

Footage circulated online showing the attacker aiming and shooting at the young man, who has a prosthetic right leg.

After being shot, the victim clutched his abdomen and fell, while the shooter approached and began to beat him. The video shows at least three men trying to stop the man. According to media reports, the shooting took place in the Industrialnyi district, and the shooter was detained.

The Kharkiv Regional Police later commented on the incident, confirming that the suspect both shot and assaulted the veteran.

"On the evening of August 3, police received reports from witnesses about a shooting in the Industrialnyi district. Police units, an investigative team, and a forensic laboratory immediately arrived at the scene," the statement says.

According to law enforcement, during a sudden conflict, one participant drew a traumatic pistol and fired point-blank at the opponent before assaulting him. As a result, the 22-year-old Ukrainian war veteran was hospitalized.

"During the quarrel, a 43-year-old suspect drew a 9mm PMR traumatic pistol and fired at the veteran of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The victim is a 22-year-old Ukrainian defender who lost his leg during a combat mission in the war and uses a prosthetic," the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor's Office clarified.

After the accident, police quickly located and detained the shooter, a local resident born in 1981. He was detained under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.

"The investigators have launched a pre-trial investigation under Part 4, Article 296 (hooliganism) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The article provides for up to 7 years of imprisonment. All details of the case are being established," police reported.

Regarding the victim, the prosecutor's office confirmed he remains in the hospital and is receiving all necessary medical care.

Other accidents

About a week ago, an unknown person opened fire on a moving car in Kyiv's Podilsky district. The offender was soon detained.

According to the suspect, he acted in response to a conflict with the driver that took place the day before. The owner of the vehicle that was shot at was unharmed.
