'Shameful beliefs'. Ukrainian MP says Witkoff should be dismissed after remarks on 'referendums'

Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Foreign Policy and Interparliamentary Cooperation, Oleksandr Merezhko, believes that Special Envoy of the US President Steve Witkoff should be recalled from his post because of his statements about Russia's so-called “referendums” in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, Radio Liberty reports.
Merezhko says Witkoff's words were shocking and shameful.
“He is retransmitting Russian propaganda. And I have a question, who is he? Is he Trump's envoy, or Putin's? I don't have an answer to this question. How can I explain it? I think that the worst thing in this situation, the most dangerous thing, is that Mr. Witkoff says in this interview “I represent Trump's interests, I express his point of view,” Merezhko said.
He added that Trump should disavow Witkoff's statements as contradicting the White House's position, and dismiss him.
Merezhko expresses hope that Trump's staff does not share the special counsel's views. According to him, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz understand what is at stake and do not share the same views as Wittkoff.
“I hope that this is an exception, that this is not the president's own point of view. But only Trump himself can answer this question: he can either confirm that he agrees with such terrible views or deny them,” the MP added.
Witkoff's statements on 'referendums'
Witkoff gave an interview to the scandalous host Tucker Carlson. He spoke about the full-scale war in Ukraine, the ceasefire, and the country's intention to join NATO.
According to him, “the largest issue in that conflict are these so-called four regions”. He meant Donbas, Crimea, Luhansk, and "two others”. He noted that these territories are allegedly “Russian-speaking” and that “referendums” were held there, during which “the overwhelming majority of the people have indicated that they want to be under Russian rule.”
