Each of us should learn to separate from our parents in time, as the future of an adult depends on this direction. RBC-Ukraine shares insights on how to properly separate from parents, according to the psychological portal Zebra Centr on Instagram.

Why separation is such an important process

Many believe that separation is a natural process, but in reality, looking around and interacting with numerous people, you might come across 30-40-year-olds who are still dependent boys and girls, deeply reliant on their parents. This dependency can manifest both in their daily lives and on a mental level.

Understanding whether you have separated from your parents or not is quite easy. Simply analyze the emotions you experience when communicating with them. If you are accustomed to relying solely on your parents in life, feel guilty when going against their judgment, live in anticipation of their approval, or constantly compare yourself to them in life choices, chances are your separation hasn’t properly occurred, and you might still be fully dependent on them.

The most effective way for an adult to separate from their parents is to undergo psychotherapy. This process will help identify where things went wrong, unravel any mental blocks hindering you from living your life, and work through these aspects with the help of a specialist.

However, if you are not yet ready for psychotherapy and wish to take initial steps toward separation right away, there are some things you should know.

Steps for separation from parents

Step one: Build your own lifestyle that isn't solely based on parental experience.

Step two: Stop seeking validation for your parents' expectations.

Step three: Learn to recognize moments where your parents manipulate you.

Step four: Remember that love and respect do not equate to obedience.

Step five: Honestly express when something displeases or makes you uncomfortable.

Step six: Compile a list highlighting the differences between you and your parents. Step Seven: Learn to set your own boundaries.

Step eight: Finally take responsibility for your own life.
