Scholz says he doesn't expect US to stop supporting Ukraine
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz does not expect the United States to cut aid to Ukraine after the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, reports The Guardian.
At a press conference in Berlin, Scholz said he had spoken with Trump twice after the US election and added that the parties were engaged in an “intense” diplomatic dialogue.
“We can therefore hope that good cooperation between Europe and the USA will continue to be successful in the future, including on the issue of support for Ukraine. So I don’t expect the US to stop supporting Ukraine in its defense,” he said.
US assistance to Ukraine
The United States is one of Ukraine's key allies in countering Russian aggression, providing large-scale military, economic, and humanitarian assistance. Military support includes the supply of modern weapons such as HIMARS systems, Javelin anti-tank systems, Patriot anti-aircraft systems, and ammunition, as well as training for the Ukrainian military. Washington also provides intelligence and helps to strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities.
On January 8, the United States announced the final package of support for Kyiv from the administration of US President Joe Biden. About $3.8 billion, which was earmarked by Congress, remains unused.
