Scholz rejects Zelenskyy's call to shoot down missiles and drones over Ukraine
Germany has rejected calls to shoot down Russian missiles and drones over Ukraine. Additionally, Berlin is unwilling to lift restrictions on strikes on Russia using Western weaponry, according to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Scholz rejected Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's appeal to allies to intercept Russian missiles and drones over Ukraine. The German Chancellor made this statement at a press conference following the European Political Community summit in the United Kingdom.
According to the media, Scholz's objections also extended to Zelenskyy's call to lift restrictions on using provided Western weaponry for strikes on Russian territory.
When asked if Scholz agreed with other NATO countries regarding Zelenskyy's appeals, he said: "I see a consensus that such steps are out of the question, and the United States has also made this very clear."
What Zelenskyy said
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy participated in the European Political Community Summit in the United Kingdom on July 18. He urged partners to strengthen Ukraine's air defense and lift restrictions on using provided weaponry for strikes on Russia.
Zelenskyy said that all airfields from which Russia attacks Ukraine should be destroyed.
Most allies have allowed Ukraine to use supplied weapons to strike Russia's border regions to stop new attacks. This comes amid a renewed offensive by the occupiers in the northern Kharkiv region.
