Scholz announces plans to run for re-election as German Chancellor in 2025
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has announced his intention to participate in the 2025 election campaign as a candidate for Chancellor, according to Zeit Online.
"We are all determined to go into the next general election together and win. I will run for Chancellor to become Chancellor again," he said.
The next general election in Germany is expected to take place on September 28, 2025.
Olaf Scholz (a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany) took office as Chancellor of Germany in 2021. He succeeded Angela Merkel, who had been German Chancellor since 2005. Before becoming the head of the German government, Scholz headed the Ministry of Finance for three years. From March 2018 to December 2019, he also served as Deputy Head of the SPD.
Earlier, Scholz stated that supporting Ukraine is a matter of Germany's historical responsibility.
At the same time, the Chancellor noted that the German authorities could not support a ceasefire in Ukraine if it meant Kyiv's capitulation.
However, Scholz believes that Russia could end the war in Ukraine today or at any moment. However, Russia has refused to do so.
