In Germany, questions about the correctness of supporting Ukraine are increasingly being raised. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated in an interview with Schweriner Volkszeitung that the government acknowledged that Germans were not explained why it is important to support Ukrainians.

He confirmed that during civic dialogues in both eastern and western parts of Germany, people are increasingly asking whether the level of support for Ukraine is really justified.

Scholz noted that for a long time, there were no questions about the appropriateness of aid to Ukraine in interviews, and there were no discussions in newspapers, on television, or on the radio. In his opinion, had such discussions been held, more German citizens might have been convinced of the need to support Ukrainians.

“As Chancellor, I was simply asked why I didn't send more weapons to Ukraine sooner. However, the question of whether this is even right was hardly raised. And I forgot to explain why it is important to support Ukraine while staying balanced, without doing everything that some loudly demand,” Scholz said.

At the same time, the Chancellor emphasized that his position on supplying long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine and the use of German weapons for strikes deep into Russia has not changed.

Germany's aid to Ukraine

Germany is one of Ukraine's leading partners in terms of the amount of aid provided. Berlin has delivered multiple rocket launch systems, artillery, anti-aircraft guns, advanced air defense systems, and other weapons to the Ukrainian army. However, Germany has refused to supply Taurus cruise missiles.

In addition, Berlin supports Ukraine's accession to the EU and backs European Union sanctions against Russia and all those who help the Kremlin regime.
