Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson has agreed to take the lead role in a new adaptation of the cult horror film The Exorcist. This is a rather unusual move for the actress, who has not previously appeared in films of this genre. Deadline reports details about the upcoming movie, which will not be connected to the franchise's most recent trilogy.
New chapter in The Exorcist universe
Director and screenwriter Mike Flanagan, the creator of the acclaimed psychological horror series The Fall of the House of Usher and The Haunting of Hill House, will lead the project.
The new film will introduce a completely new story within The Exorcist universe. It will not be linked to David Gordon Green's recent trilogy, the last film of which, The Exorcist: Believer, grossed only $136 million worldwide.
The film's producers are relying on Flanagan's signature style, as he is known for creating psychologically intense and visually striking horror films.
Flanagan himself is thrilled about Johansson's involvement.
"Scarlett is a brilliant actress whose captivating performances always feel grounded and real, from genre films to summer blockbusters, and I couldn't be happier to have her join this Exorcist film," he says.

The decision to cast a Marvel star in the lead role is a strategic move by the studios aimed at renewing interest in the franchise. The 1973 Exorcist became truly iconic, earning 10 Oscar nominations and forever changing the horror genre. However, the following sequels received mixed reviews.
A new wave of interest began after the franchise rights were sold to Universal and Peacock for $400 million.
The studios are counting on Johansson's box office appeal: her recent film Jurassic World: Rebirth earned nearly $869 million, while the latest installment of the horror franchise showed far more modest results.

Flanagan, known for his delicate handling of iconic horror stories, is an ideal candidate for the reboot.
Interestingly, earlier reports in US media suggested that Johansson was also being considered for the role of the villain Mother Gothel in a live-action version of Tangled (also known as Rapunzel).
The actress herself is keeping the intrigue. Although in one interview, she did say that anything is possible.
