The Security Service of Ukraine's (SBU) counterintelligence unit has apprehended a Russian agent who was directing missile and drone strikes by the Russian Federation in the Donetsk region. Among the enemy's priority targets were military hospitals and other medical facilities where Ukrainian defenders were being treated and rehabilitated, according to the SBU.

Russian intelligence recruited a resident of Kramatorsk who came to their attention due to anti-Ukrainian comments on Russian social networks.

The agent gathered intelligence on the locations of operational airfields and provided coordinates for strikes. Communication with the Russian handler was conducted via messenger, using fabricated nicknames for secrecy.

The SBU identified the agent and his Russian handler, meticulously documenting their crimes. The handler sent the agent Google Maps, on which he marked intelligence data and transmitted it to the Russian special services.

The agent was apprehended at his place of residence. His phone and computer equipment, which were used to transmit data to the enemy, were seized.

The detainee has been charged under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (treason committed under martial law). He faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

SBU hunting down Russian agents

Earlier, the SBU detained a Russian intelligence informant who was passing on the coordinates of Ukrainian military positions in the Donetsk region to the enemy.

Additionally, the SBU uncovered a Russian informant who was spying on HIMARS deployment points near Pokrovsk.
