According to Governor Oleg Kozhemyako and Russian public media, the vice-governor of the Primorsky Krai of Russia Sergey Yefremov was killed in the war zone in the Kursk region. He was the head of the Tiger unit fighting against Ukraine.

"While returning from a combat mission, the commander of the Tiger squad, Serhiy Yefremov, was killed," Kozhemyako said.

He did not give any details, but noted that he "died while leaving for reconnaissance."

Russian Telegram channels wrote that Yefremov was in a car that hit a mine in the Kursk region. In addition to him, another Russian officer was killed.

The head of the Center for Countering Disinformation at the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Andriy Kovalenko, also said that Yefremov had exploded.

Who is Sergey Yefremov?

Yefremov commanded the Tiger unit, formed in Primorye in the summer of 2022 based on the 155th Marine Brigade of the Pacific Fleet, and recruited so-called "volunteers."

In March 2024, he took office as vice-governor of Primorsky Krai. Russian authorities reported that he had experience in military service in assault units. With the beginning of the Ukrainian Defense Forces' offensive in the Kursk region, he returned to the war.

In December 2024, according to RBC-Ukraine's sources, Ukrainian special services liquidated the head of the Radiation and Chemical Defense Troops, General Igor Kirillov. A day earlier, the SBU notified him in absentia of suspicion of mass use of chemical weapons against the Ukrainian Defense Forces.

Before that, in the fall, Colonel Alexei Kolomeitsev, who trained Shahed operatives, was killed in the Moscow region.

According to BBC estimates based on open data, at least 9 Russian generals and 500 officers with the rank of lieutenant colonel and above were killed during the full-scale war.
