Russia, on the night of Sunday, September 28, once again carried out a combined strike on Ukraine. Powerful explosions were heard in several cities, and initial damage has been reported.

RBC-Ukraine reports everything known about the nighttime attack.

Key points:

  • Overnight, Russia attacked using Shahed drones, Kinzhal missiles, and launched cruise missiles by morning.
  • The strikes hit at least Kyiv, Kyiv region, and Zaporizhzhia.

Weapons used by Russia

Drones

According to the Air Force, the Shahed drone attack this night started later than usual.

In previous attacks, the enemy typically launched many Shahed drones starting around 18:00 Kyiv time. This time, it was relatively quiet at that hour, with the massive drone detection beginning at 23:06.

Strike drones were recorded across multiple regions, with reports of raids on Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia.

Kinzhal missiles

At around 02:27 Kyiv time, an air raid alert was declared across Ukraine. The reason was the takeoff of a MiG-31K, which carries the aeroballistic Kinzhal missile.

A few minutes later, monitoring channels reported that the MiG had launched missiles. The information was later confirmed by the Air Force. The military noted that the high-speed targets were heading toward the Zhytomyr region, with subsequent reports indicating movement toward the Khmelnytskyi region.

Cruise missiles

In the morning, cruise missiles entered Ukrainian airspace. Monitoring channels reported that, initially, the enemy launched strategic Tu-95MS bombers and Tu-160 aircraft, and closer to dawn carried out missile launches. The Air Forces confirmed only the takeoff of the Tu-95 bombers and that these planes fired missiles.

Additionally, the Air Forces reported a missile threat from the south, and monitoring channels noted at least three salvoes of Kalibr missiles.

First consequences of the massive attack

  • Zaporizhzhia: The strikes, apparently carried out by drones and MLRS, damaged a gas station and private houses, and a fire broke out in one of the districts. Three people were injured.
  • Kyiv: In the Solomyanskyi district, a five-story building was partially destroyed. Debris also fell in the Sviatoshynskyi and Holosiivskyi districts. Two people were injured.
  • Kyiv region: Damage has been reported in four districts, including fires affecting houses and vehicles.
