Russian military stuck in the high seas while fleeing Syria - Ukrainian intelligence
Part of the Russian military got stuck in the high seas on a broken cargo ship Sparta during the evacuation from Syria, Defense Intelligence of Ukraine reports.
“The cargo ship Sparta, which Russia sent to take its weapons and equipment out of Syria, broke down while underway - the fuel pipe of the main engine failed. The Russian crew is trying to fix the problem and is drifting in the high seas near Portugal,” Ukrainian intelligence writes.
It is also noted that the remnants of the Russian troops in Syria have already completed their withdrawal from remote areas and are now located at:
- Khmeimim Air Base;
- the naval base in Tartus
In particular, Russia has begun moving some of its weapons and equipment by sea from the port of Tartus to Libya.
“Also, the Russian military in Syria is actively discussing the alleged demand of the new government of the Arab republic to Moscow to completely withdraw its military contingent from Syrian territory, in particular from the bases in Khmeimim and Tartus, no later than February 20, 2025,” the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine writes, adding that this is due to the desire of the new government in Damascus to achieve the lifting of international sanctions.
Russian troops withdrawal from Syria
After the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime, Russia began to withdraw some of its troops from Syria, as confirmed by satellite images. On December 14, the Ukrainian intelligence service also said that Russia was having great difficulty evacuating its soldiers from the country.
