Russia wants to destroy Ukrainian nation, control former USSR countries: Sandu says
The war in Ukraine is aimed at destroying the country; Russia wants to control former Soviet states, as it did in the past with countries in Central and Eastern Europe, according to a statement made by the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu.
She participated in the 27th Forum 2000 conference, which traditionally took place in Czechia. In her speech, Maia Sandu emphasized the importance of democracy in the context of Russia's war against Ukraine.
"For me, it's a great honor to be here and think together about the present and future of democracy. The last time I participated in this forum was in 2019 when I was the Prime Minister. It was shortly after we got rid of the authoritarian regime that intended to turn Moldova into a gray zone of lawlessness," said Maia Sandu.
Russia aims to destroy Ukraine as a state
Sandu states that the war in Ukraine is aimed at the destruction of the country and its people as a nation.
"If Russia were successful, Moldova would likely cease to exist as a free state. Today, Russia wants to control former Soviet states, as it did in the past with countries in Central and Eastern Europe," emphasized the President of Moldova.
According to her, it is a mistake to think that countries in the region can stay out of it. She notes that most countries need to make a choice that will determine their future for decades to come.
"On which side do you want to be? On the side of democracy and freedom or on the side of oppression and propaganda?" Sandu added.
Assistance to Ukraine from Moldova
It was previously reported that Moldova wanted to help Ukraine with grain transit. The country was trying to find a solution that would satisfy local farmers and help our state.
It was also mentioned in Moldova that a crucial moment had arrived that would determine the country's future.
They believe that Russia will continue to be a source of instability for the country. Recently, the Moldovan government prepared a draft resolution on providing humanitarian aid to Ukraine in connection with the disaster caused by the destruction of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant by Russian occupiers.
