EU diplomacy chief Kaja Kallas stated that Russia's aggression against Ukraine is a gross violation of international law, according to the press service of the European External Action Service.

Assessment at the global level

Russia's military aggression against Ukraine is viewed by the European Union as one of the most serious violations of international law in recent decades.

Kaja Kallas made this statement during the annual UN Security Council meeting dedicated to cooperation between the EU and the United Nations.

"Today we are witnessing the gravest violation and breakdown of international law since the Second World War," Kallas said, emphasizing that this is unfolding against the backdrop of two key crises – Russia's war against Ukraine and the conflict in the Middle East.

Crises as a sign of a changing world order

According to Kallas, the events in Europe and the Middle East demonstrate a departure from established international rules, including the principles enshrined in the UN Charter.

She noted that a new system of international relations is taking shape, one marked by intensifying competition and the politics of pressure.

Role of Russia and support for Iran

The special envoy of Russian leader Vladimir Putin, Kirill Dmitriev, has traveled to the US for negotiations with the team of the American president.

Agency sources said that Dmitriev is meeting with members of Donald Trump's administration to discuss a peace agreement on Ukraine and US-Russia economic cooperation.

"Russia is executing one of the most outrageous breaches of international law in United Nations history, by invading a sovereign country and turning its back on its obligations as a Permanent Member of the UN Security Council," she stated.

Impact of the war in the Middle East

The diplomat also noted that the conflict in the Middle East has gone beyond the regional level and is affecting global security.

"Its effects ripple worldwide," Kallas said.

Reasons behind the Kremlin's interest

According to the EU representative, Russia supports Iran, including by providing intelligence data and drones, because the continuation of the conflict serves its interests.

This includes rising energy prices, the depletion of air defense systems, and diverting attention away from the war against Ukraine.

Russian leader Vladimir Putin's special representative, Kirill Dmitriev, has arrived in the US for negotiations with members of the US presidential administration. It is reported that he is meeting with Donald Trump's team, during which they are discussing a possible peace agreement on Ukraine and prospects for economic cooperation between the US and Russia.

Kremlin head Vladimir Putin directed submarines toward the UK's underwater infrastructure, including cables and pipelines, but this operation ended in failure. Following this, London openly warned Moscow of possible serious consequences.
