Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of January 5

As of 10:00 PM on January 5, a total of 172 combat engagements took place along the frontline over the past day. The highest number of clashes was recorded in the Pokrovsk, Huliaipole, and Kostiantynivka directions, according to the report from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Over the course of the day, Russian forces carried out three missile strikes and 24 air strikes, using 10 missiles and dropping 79 guided aerial bombs. In addition, Russian forces deployed 3,083 kamikaze drones and conducted 3,038 strikes on the positions of Ukrainian troops and populated areas.
Frontlines updates
In the North Slobozhanskyi and Kursk directions, Russian forces conducted two air strikes, dropped seven aerial bombs, and carried out 63 attacks, including two using multiple launch rocket systems.
In the South Slobozhanskyi direction, Ukrainian troops repelled four attacks by Russian forces near Vovchansk, Prylipky, and toward Kutkivka.
In the Kupiansk direction, Russian forces have attempted twice since the beginning of the day to advance toward Kurylivka and Kupiansk, but were repelled both times.
In the Lyman direction, Russian forces attacked Ukrainian positions nine times over the past day near Nadiia, Zarichne, and toward Drobysheve, Stavky, and Lyman.
In the Sloviansk direction, the Defense Forces repelled two attacks by Russian forces near Zakitne.
In the Kramatorsk direction, Russian forces did not conduct offensive actions.
In the Kostiantynivka direction, Russian forces carried out 20 attacks on Defense Forces positions. The main offensive efforts were concentrated near Oleksandro-Shultyne, Pleshchiivka, Shcherbynivka, Rusyn Yar, and toward Stepanivka, Ivanopillia, Kostiantynivka, Berestok, and Sofiivka.
In the Pokrovsk direction, Russian assault units attempted 38 times to break through Ukrainian defenses near Chervonyi Lyman, Sukhetske, Zatyshok, Rodynske, Myrnohrad, Pokrovsk, Kotlyne, Udachne, Molodetske, Dachne, Filiia, and toward Hryshyne and Ivanivka. Fighting is still ongoing in several locations.
"Today, in this direction, Ukrainian defenders neutralized 142 Russian troops, including 98 killed. They also destroyed 31 UAVs, three motorcycles, two satellite communication terminals, six vehicles, two pieces of special equipment, one UAV control point, and three personnel shelters. In addition, Ukrainian forces damaged two infantry fighting vehicles, one artillery system, one multiple launch rocket system, three vehicles, two pieces of special equipment, and 12 personnel shelters," the report said.
In the Oleksandrivka direction, Russian forces attacked 14 times near Vyshneve, Zlahoda, Sichneve, Oleksandrohrad, Sosnivka, and toward Ivanivka. One engagement is still ongoing.
In the Huliaipole direction, the Defense Forces repelled 34 attacks by Russian forces near Uspenivka, Solodke, Huliaipole, and toward Dobropillia, Varvarivka, Zelene, and Pryluky. Seven engagements are still underway. Air strikes hit Zaliznychne, Rizdvianka, Ternuvate, and Vozdvyzhivka.
In the Orikhiv direction, the Defense Forces repelled two attempted Russian offensives near Plavni and toward Prymorske. Tavriiske came under an air strike.
In the Prydniprovskyi direction, Russian forces unsuccessfully attacked Ukrainian positions twice.
In other directions, the situation did not undergo significant changes.
Losses of Russian army
Russia continues to incur heavy losses in its war against Ukraine.
Over the past day alone, from January 4 to January 5, Russian forces lost 990 personnel. Ukrainian forces also destroyed 29 artillery systems, 169 vehicles, and 704 drones.
Overall, since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russia’s losses have exceeded 1.2 million personnel.
