Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of September 28

Yesterday, Russian forces dropped guided aerial bombs, launched thousands of drones, and simultaneously carried out assaults across multiple directions, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Over the past 24 hours, 173 combat engagements were recorded. According to updated data, the enemy carried out 81 airstrikes, using 156 guided bombs. In addition, 5,118 artillery strikes were recorded, including 107 from multiple rocket launch systems, along with the use of 6,262 kamikaze drones.
The airstrikes targeted areas in the settlements of Kostiantynivka in Donetsk region, Bilohirшa, Mala Tokmachka, Chervona Krynytsia in Zaporizhzhia, and Mykolaivka in Kherson region.
In response, the Defense Forces’ aviation, missile troops, and artillery struck six areas of enemy troop and equipment concentrations, four UAV command points, an ammunition depot, and three key enemy facilities.
Northern frontlines
- In the Northern-Slobozhanskyi and Kursk directions, Ukrainian troops repelled five attacks. The enemy carried out 20 airstrikes, dropping 50 guided bombs, and launched 205 artillery strikes, including 12 from multiple rocket launch systems.
- In the Southern-Slobozhanskyi direction, the occupiers attempted five assaults on Ukrainian positions near Vovchansk, Krasne Pershe, and toward Doroshivka.
Eastern directions
- In the Kupiansk direction, six attacks were recorded, with battles near Petropavlivka and toward Pishchane and Bohuslavka.
- In the Lyman direction, the enemy tried 15 times to breach defenses near Shandryholove, Kolodiazi, and Torske.
- In the Siversk direction, six attacks occurred near Serebrianka, Fedorivka, and toward Dronivka.
- In the Kramatorsk direction, three attempts to advance toward Stupochky were recorded.
Hotspots
- In the Toretsk direction, the enemy attacked 14 times near Oleksandro-Shultynske, Shcherbynivka, Pleshchiivka, Yablunivka, and Rusynyi Yar.
- In the Pokrovsk direction, the highest number of attacks — 59 — was recorded, with fighting near Volodymyrivka, Nikanorivka, Chervonyi Lyman, Sukhetske, Novoekonomichne, Mykolaivka, Lysivka, Zvirove, Kotlyne, Udachne, Novomykolaivka, Kotliarivka, and Dachne.
- In the Novopavlivka direction, 21 engagements occurred near Sichneve, Piddubne, Novoselivka, Sosnivka, Maliivka, Novomykolaivka, Berezove, and Novohryhorivka.
- In the Huliaipole direction, Ukrainian troops repelled nine attacks near Poltavka.
- In the Orikhiv direction, Defense Forces repelled six attacks near Stepove, Kamianske, and toward Novodanilivka and Novoandriivka.
Southern frontlines
- In the Prydniprovskyi direction, the enemy carried out one unsuccessful attack.
- In the Volyn and Polissia directions, no signs of offensive formations were detected.
In the south, Defense Forces spokesperson Vladyslav Voloshyn reported that Russian troops are beginning to prepare for combat, taking into account the coming cold and worsening weather conditions. The occupiers have already started regrouping their forces and equipment.
Earlier, Dmitry Zaporozhets, a representative of the 11th Army Corps, said that in the Siverskyi direction, Russian forces are attempting to cross the Siverskyi Donets River to continue their assaults.
According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), the Russian army is currently redeploying its naval infantry from the Sumy and Kherson regions to engage in battles in eastern Ukraine.
