Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of July 17

As of 10:00 PM Kyiv time on July 17, a total of 131 combat engagements were recorded on the front lines throughout the day, with more than a third taking place in the Pokrovsk direction alone, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Russian strikes
Throughout the day, Russian forces carried out one missile strike and 62 airstrikes, using two missiles and dropping 90 guided aerial bombs. They also launched 1,249 kamikaze drones and conducted 4,280 attacks on Ukrainian military positions and populated areas.
Frontline updates
In the Northern Slobozhanskyi and Kursk directions, Ukrainian troops repelled 11 assault attempts by Russian forces, with three combat engagements still ongoing.
In the Southern Slobozhanskyi direction, Russian forces launched nine assaults near Vovchansk, Zelene, and Starytsia. Two engagements are still underway. Airstrikes were reported near Okip, Borshchova, Vovchansk, and Chuhunivka.
In the Kupiansk direction, Russian troops carried out offensive operations near Kupiansk, Zelenyi Hai, Nova Kruhliakivka, and toward Pishchane. Ukrainian defenders have already repelled three attacks, with one battle still ongoing.
In the Lyman direction, Russian forces attacked Ukrainian positions 18 times near Novoiehorivka, Hrekivka, Karpivka, Zelena Dolyna, Kolodiazi, Serebrianka, and toward Shandryholove. Seven engagements are still in progress.
In the Siversk direction, Ukrainian forces repelled three assaults by Russian troops near Hryhorivka and in the direction of Vyiimka.
In the Kramatorsk direction, Russian forces launched 11 attacks near Chasiv Yar, Stupochky, Bila Hora, and Predtechyne.
In the Toretsk direction, Russian troops attempted seven assaults near Shcherbynivka, Oleksandro-Kalynove, Petrivka, Rusyn Yar, and toward Pleshchiivka. All engagements in this area have concluded.
In the Pokrovsk direction, Russian forces attempted to advance 48 times since the beginning of the day. Attacks were recorded near Poltavka, Popiv Yar, Rodynske, Novotoretske, Myroliubivka, Novoekonomichne, Lysivka, Novoukrainka, Zvirove, Udachne, Muravka, Oleksiivka, and in the direction of Pokrovsk and Novopavlivka. Three combat engagements are still ongoing.
"Preliminary reports indicate that 231 Russian troops were neutralized in this direction today, including 130 killed. Ukrainian forces also destroyed one tank, three armored vehicles, three cars, three motorcycles, two artillery pieces, 18 UAVs, one satellite communication terminal, and five drone control antennas. Additionally, one tank, five artillery pieces, and two motorcycles were damaged," the report said.
In the Novopavlivka direction, Russian forces attempted 12 assaults near Piddubne, Zirka, Temyrivka, Myrne, Voskresenka, Vilne Pole, and Shevchenko. Two engagements are still ongoing.
In the Huliaipole, Orikhiv, and Prydniprovskyi directions, no ground assaults by Russian troops were recorded, but airstrikes targeted Bilohiria, Stepnohirsk, and Olhivka.
Russian army losses
From July 16 to 17, Russian forces lost an additional 1,190 personnel in battles with Ukrainian forces. Ukraine’s Armed Forces also destroyed 43 artillery systems and 154 vehicles.
Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russian military losses have exceeded 1 million troops.
