Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of August 17

As of 16:00 on August 17, 72 combat engagements took place on the frontline since the beginning of the day. More than a third of them took place in the Pokrovsk sector, reports the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Enemy shelling
The military noted that the enemy continues to use aircraft and artillery along the border of the Sumy region. In particular, the areas of Fotovyzh, Bachivsk, Druzhba, Novovasylivka, Velyka Berizka, Romashkove, Prohres, Popivka, Tymofiivka, and Pokrovka came under artillery fire. Moreover, the enemy aviation attacked the areas of Zarutske, Starykove, Khotin, Yunakivka, and Basivka, using a total of 11 guided aerial bombs.
Situation on the frontlines
Today, in the Kharkiv direction, Russians stormed the positions of Ukrainian troops four times in the areas of Vovchansk and Lyptsi. The battle is still ongoing in Vovchansk.
The enemy attacked Ukrainian positions four times in the Kupiansk direction. Ukrainian defenders repelled enemy attacks near Berestove and in the direction of Lozova. Two firefights in the area of Stelmakhivka are still ongoing.
In the Lyman direction, hostile attacks continue in the areas of Makiivka, Nevske, Hrekivka, Novoyehorivka, and Dibrova. Since the beginning of the day, there have been 14 combat engagements in this sector, with five ongoing. The situation is under control.
Fighting continues in the Siversk direction, the enemy is attacking near Verkhnekamianske, Spirne, Vyimka, and Pereizne, the militants tried to break through the Ukrainian defense six times. All attacks were repelled.
In the Kramatorsk direction, the Russian troops carried out four assault operations near Chasiv Yar. Three of these engagements are ongoing.
Toretsk direction remains one of the hottest and priority areas for the enemy army, the number of enemy attacks here is currently seven.
“Today the enemy is mainly attacking near the settlements of Pivnichne, Toretsk, and Zalizne, our defenders are giving a worthy fight back. Six combat engagements have already been completed. Also, the aggressor's aviation struck Kurdiumivka with unguided aerial missiles,” the statement said.
The largest number of combat engagements was registered in the Pokrovsk direction. Since the beginning of the day, the enemy has already made 25 attempts to push the Ukrainian defenders from their positions in the areas of Vozdvyzhenka, Myroliubivka, Novotroitske, Novohrodivka, Hrodivka, Mykolaivka, Zhelanne, Zavitne and attacked towards Zelene Pole. The defense forces have already repelled 14 enemy attacks, and 11 combat engagements are still ongoing. Oleksandropil was hit by a Russian-made missile attack.
In the Kurakhove direction, the enemy attacked Ukrainian troops nine times, trying to advance near Kostiantynivka. A guided aerial bomb attack was carried out on Memryk.
In the Vremivka direction, the invaders tried to attack in the direction of Vuhledar with one unsuccessful attempt.
One enemy attack was also repelled in the Prydniprovskyi direction.
Today, Russian troops attacked the Zaporizhzhia region by air, dropping three glide bombs in the area of Novodanylivka, and struck Novoandriivka and Kamianske with unguided missiles.
The situation in other sectors remained unchanged.
Over the last day, from August 16 to 17, the Russians lost 1230 soldiers at the front. In total, Russia's losses since the beginning of the full-scale war amount to 598,180 soldiers. Also, the Ukrainian Armed Forces destroyed 5 enemy tanks, 12 armored personnel carriers, and 58 artillery systems over the past day.
