Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of January 22

Ukrainian forces continue operations to expand their foothold in the Kherson direction and deter the enemy in the Donetsk region. Over the past day, there have been 68 combat engagements, according to data from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Russian attacks
In total, the enemy conducted 4 missile and 102 aviation strikes, launching 80 barrages from multiple rocket launcher systems on the positions of our troops and populated areas. Unfortunately, there are casualties and injuries among the civilian population due to Russian terrorist attacks. Residential private and multi-story buildings, as well as other civilian infrastructure, have suffered destruction and damage.
During the past day, Russian occupiers carried out another aviation strike, employing 10 Shahed-136/131 attack UAVs. With the efforts and means of Ukraine's air defense, 8 attack UAVs were destroyed.
Aviation strikes targeted: Hrafske, Vovchansk, Mykolaivka, Vilkhuvatka, Ivanivka, Kyslivka, Tabaiivka, Pishchane in the Kharkiv region; Makiivka, Serebrianske forestry in the Luhansk region; Yampolivka, Hryhorivka, Minkivka, Bohdanivka, Chasiv Yar, Kostiantynivka, Toretsk, Pivnichne, New York, Lastochkyne, Avdiivka, Staromayorske, Rivnopil, Novomykhailivka, Kostiantynivka in the Donetsk region; Chervonyi Mayak, Zmiivka, Novoberyslav, Vesele in the Kherson region.
Over 100 populated areas in the Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson, and Mykolaiv regions came under artillery fire.
Situation at the frontlines
In the area of responsibility of the Operational and strategic grouping of troops North in the Volyn and Polissia directions, the operational situation remains unchanged without significant alterations.
In the Siversk and Slobozhanske directions, the adversary maintains military presence in border areas, conducts active sabotage activities to prevent the redeployment of our forces to critical directions, and increases the density of mine-explosive barriers along the state border in the Belgorod region.
In the area of responsibility of the Operational and strategic grouping of troops Khortytsia in the Kupiansk direction, our defenders repelled 7 enemy attacks near Synkivka in the Kharkiv region.
In the Lyman direction, Ukrainian soldiers repelled 5 attacks by occupiers near Terny and Yampolivka in the Donetsk region, and another 6 attacks near Bilohorivka in the Luhansk region.
In the Bakhmut direction, Defense Forces repelled 7 enemy attacks east of Hryhorivka, Bohdanivka, Ivanivske, and Klyshchivka in the Donetsk region.
In the area of responsibility of the Operational and strategic grouping of troops Tavria in the Avdiivka direction, Ukrainian defenders continue to restrain the enemy, who persists in attempting to encircle Avdiivka. Our soldiers steadfastly hold the defense, inflicting significant losses on the aggressors.
During the past day, the Defense Forces repelled 5 enemy attacks in the areas of Novobakhmutivka, Stepove, and Avdiivka, as well as another 12 attacks south of Severne, Pervomaiske, and Nevelske in the Donetsk region.
In the Maryinka direction, the Defense Forces continue to restrain the enemy in the areas of Heorhiivka and Novomykhailivka in the Donetsk region, where 5 attacks were repelled.
In the Shakhtarsk direction, the enemy did not engage in offensive (assault) actions.
In the Zaporizhzhia direction, our defenders repelled 7 enemy attacks west of Verbove and Robotyne in the Zaporizhzhia region.
In the area of responsibility of the Operational and strategic grouping of troops Odesa in the Kherson direction, the defense forces continue their efforts to expand the foothold. Despite significant losses, the enemy persists in trying to dislodge our units from their positions. During the past day, the adversary carried out 6 unsuccessful assaults on the positions of Ukrainian forces.
Enemy losses
At the same time, our soldiers continue actively engaging in actions to inflict losses on the occupying forces in terms of personnel and equipment, wearing down the enemy along the entire front line.
Over the course of the day, the Defense Forces' aviation conducted strikes on 9 areas of concentration of enemy personnel, weaponry, and military equipment.
Rocket forces units targeted 1 area of concentration of enemy personnel, 1 command point, 3 artillery assets, and 1 air defense system.
