Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of January 17

Ukrainian soldiers continue to hold positions on the left bank of the Dnieper, repelling a Russian attack near Novodonetsk (Donetsk region) and destroying an enemy ammunition depot, reports the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Russian shelling
The Russian Federation continues its aggressive war. Despite significant losses, it refuses to abandon plans for the full occupation of Ukraine. The adversary continues to ignore the laws and customs of war, employing terror tactics, striking both military and civilian targets.
The enemy actively deploys aviation and FPV-type quadcopters, conducting assault operations with armored support. The operational situation in the east and south of Ukraine remains challenging.
Over the past day, there were 71 combat clashes. In total, the enemy delivered 6 missiles and 69 aviation strikes, conducting 35 barrages from multiple launch rocket systems on the positions of our forces and populated areas.
Due to Russian terrorist attacks, unfortunately, there are casualties and injuries among the civilian population. Private residential houses and other civilian infrastructure have suffered destruction and damage.
Frontline situation
On the Volyn and Polissia fronts, the operational situation remains without significant changes. There are no signs of forming offensive groupings. Identified units of the Armed Forces of Belarus are performing tasks in border areas with Ukraine.
On the Siversk and Slobozhanske fronts, the adversary maintains military presence in border areas, conducts sabotage and reconnaissance activities, shells settlements from the territory of the Russian Federation, and increases the density of mine-explosive barriers along the state border of Ukraine.
The enemy carried out aviation strikes in the areas of Fedorivka and Vovchansk, the Kharkiv region. Approximately 30 settlements, including Bleshnia, Karpovychi, Yeline in the Chernihiv region; Seredyna-Buda, Romashkove, Sosnivka in the Sumy region; Okip, Kozacha Lopan, Hatysche, Pletenivka in the Kharkiv region, were subjected to artillery and mortar shelling.
On the Kupiansk front, our defenders repelled 6 attacks near Synkivka, Kharkiv region, where the enemy attempted to improve tactical positions. About 10 settlements, including Synkivka, Ivanivka, Berestove in the Kharkiv region, came under artillery and mortar fire.
On the Lyman front, our defenders repelled 10 attacks by occupiers near Terniv and Yampolivka in the Donetsk region, and another 8 attacks in the areas of Makiivka and Bilohorivka in the Luhansk region. Here, the enemy, with aviation support, unsuccessfully tried to break through the defense of our forces. The enemy also conducted an aviation strike in the area of Serebrianske forestry in the Luhansk region.
About 15 settlements, including Makiivka, Nevske, Bilohorivka in the Luhansk region, and Yampolivka, Torske, Serebrianka, Rozdolivka in the Donetsk region, suffered from enemy artillery and mortar shelling.
On the Bakhmut front, the Defense Forces repelled 7 enemy attacks in the areas of Hryhorivka, Ivanivka, Klyshchivka, and Andriivka in the Donetsk region. About 10 settlements, including Kalynivka, Bohdanivka, Ivanivka, Klyshchivka, Andriivka in the Donetsk region, were under artillery and mortar fire.
On the Avdiivka front, our defenders repelled 11 enemy attacks in the areas of Novokalynove, Novobakhmutivka, Avdiivka, and another 13 attacks near Severne, Pervomaiske, Nevelske in the Donetsk region. Here, the occupiers, with aviation support, unsuccessfully attempted to improve tactical positions.
About 15 settlements, including Novokalynove, Novobakhmutivka, Berdychiv in the Donetsk region, and Yampolivka, Torske, Serebrianka, Rozdolivka in the Luhansk region, suffered from enemy artillery and mortar shelling.
On the Maryinka front, the Defense Forces continue to contain the enemy in the areas of Krasnohorivka, Heorhiivka, Maryinka, and Novomykhailivka in the Donetsk region. On this front, the invaders, with aviation support, attempted 9 times to break through the defense of our forces.
Moreover, the enemy conducted an aviation strike in the area of the settlement of Kostiantynivka in the Donetsk region. Settlements such as Krasnohorivka, Maksymilianivka, Pobieda, Novomykhailivka, Katerynivka were under artillery and mortar fire.
On the Shakhtarsk front, our defenders repelled an attack north of Novodonetsk in the Donetsk region, where the enemy unsuccessfully attempted to improve tactical positions. The enemy carried out an aviation strike in the area of the settlement of Vodiane in the Donetsk region.
Over 10 settlements, including Vuhledar, Pretchystivka, Zolota Nyva, Staromaiorske in the Donetsk region, suffered from enemy artillery and mortar shelling.
On the Zaporizhzhia front, the enemy did not conduct offensive (assault) actions. An aviation strike was carried out in the area of Robotyne in the Zaporizhzhia region. Over 20 settlements, including Malynivka, Charyvne, Mala Tokmachka, Novodanilivka, Robotyne, Piatyhatky in the Zaporizhzhia region, were subjected to enemy artillery and mortar shelling.
In the zone of responsibility of the Odesa operational-strategic group on the Kherson front, enemy artillery shelling affected Kherson, Antonivka in the Kherson region, and Dmytrivka in the Mykolaiv region. In addition, the enemy carried out aviation strikes in the areas of Chervonyi Maiak, Zmiivka, and Tiahynka in the Kherson region.
Advancement of the Armed Forces of Ukraine
The enemy persists in its intention to eliminate our units from the bridgeheads on the left bank of the Dnipro.
During the day, the adversary attempted six unsuccessful assaults on the positions of our forces.
Enemy losses
Throughout the day, the aviation of the Defense Forces struck seven areas of personnel, armaments, and military equipment concentration, one command post, and five enemy air defense missile systems. Additionally, one guided aviation missile X-59 was destroyed by the forces and means of Ukraine's air defense.
Missile troops units inflicted hits on one area of personnel concentration, two radar stations, two air defense systems, two artillery pieces, and one ammunition depot.
The total number of losses in the Russian army since the beginning of the invasion is 372,820 military personnel.
