Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of January 8

Ukrainian soldiers continue to expand their foothold in the Kherson direction and hold back the enemy in the Donetsk region. Over the past day, 35 combat engagements took place, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Russian attacks
The enemy launched 11 missile and 69 air strikes and fired 53 times from multiple launch rocket systems at the positions of our troops and populated areas.
Unfortunately, Russian terrorist attacks have resulted in civilian casualties and injuries. Private and apartment buildings and other civilian infrastructure were destroyed and damaged.
At night, the Russian occupiers attacked Ukraine once again, using 8 Shahed-136/131 attack drones. All enemy drones were destroyed.
The following areas suffered air strikes: Synkivka, Petropavlivka, and Berestove in the Kharkiv region; Serebrianske forestry in the Luhansk region; Kolodiazi, Torske, Dibrova, Druzhba, Avdiivka, Novomykhailivka, Heorhiivka, Krasnohorivka, Vodiane in the Donetsk region; Krynky, Respublikanets, Zmiivka, Chervonyi Mayak in the Kherson region.
About 100 settlements in Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro, Kherson, and Mykolaiv regions came under artillery fire.
The situation at the frontlines
In the area of responsibility of the North Operational Strategic Group of troops in the Volyn and Polissia directions, the operational situation remains without significant changes.
In the Siversk and Slobozhanske directions, the enemy maintains a military presence in the border areas, conducts active sabotage activities to prevent the deployment of our troops to threatened areas, and increases the density of minefields along the state border in the Belgorod region.
In the area of responsibility of the Khortytsia Operational Strategic Group of troops in the Kupiansk direction, Ukrainian defenders repelled two enemy attacks near the settlements of Sinkivka and Ivanivka in the Kharkiv region.
In the Lyman direction, Ukrainian defenders repelled 4 enemy attacks east of Terny, Donetsk region.
In the Bakhmut direction, Ukrainian soldiers repelled 3 enemy attacks near Klishchiyivka and Andriivka in the Donetsk region.
In the area of responsibility of the Tavria Operational Strategic Group of troops in the Avdiivka direction, Ukrainian defenders continue to hold back the enemy, who keeps trying to surround Avdiivka. Our soldiers are steadfastly holding the line, inflicting significant losses on the invaders. Thus, the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 6 enemy attacks near Novobakhmutivka and Avdiivka and another 15 attacks near Pervomaiske and Nevelske in the Donetsk region over the past day.
In the Maryinka direction, Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to hold back the enemy in the areas of Maryinka and Novomykhailivka in the Donetsk region, where they repelled 3 attacks.
In the Shakhtarsk direction, the occupants did not conduct any offensive (assault) actions.
In the Zaporizhzhia direction, the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled an enemy attack west of Verbove in the Zaporizhzhia region.
In the area of responsibility of the Odesa Operational Strategic Group of troops in the Kherson direction, Ukrainian soldiers continue to expand their foothold. Despite significant losses, the enemy continues to try to drive our units from their positions. Over the past day, the enemy made three unsuccessful assaults on the positions of the Ukrainian Defense Forces.
At the same time, our defenders continue to actively inflict losses in manpower and equipment on the occupation forces, depleting the enemy along the entire front line.
Russia's losses in the war against Ukraine
Over the past day, the aviation of the Ukrainian Defense Forces struck at 4 areas of concentration of enemy personnel. Ukrainian Air Defense Forces also destroyed a Russian Kh-59 guided missile.
Missile troops destroyed a control center, 2 ammunition depots, and 2 enemy artillery pieces.
