Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of January 1

Russian shelling

Within a day, there were 56 armed clashes. In total, the enemy launched one missile and 81 aerial strikes, including attacks with Shahed-136/131 combat drones. There were 37 rocket attacks on the positions of Ukrainian forces and populated areas.

As a result of Russian terrorist attacks, there are casualties and injuries among the civilian population. Private residential and multi-story buildings, as well as other civilian and industrial infrastructure, have suffered destruction and damage.

Furthermore, Russian occupiers once again attacked Ukraine today, employing 10 UAVs of the Shahed-136/131 type. Our defenders successfully neutralized nine enemy drones.

The situation on the fronts

The operational situation in the east and south of Ukraine remains challenging.

In the Volyn and Polissia directions, the operational situation is stable with no significant changes. There are no signs of the formation of offensive groups. Identified units of the Belarusian armed forces are performing tasks in border areas with Ukraine.

In the Siversk and Slobozhansk directions, the enemy maintains military presence in border areas, conducts sabotage and reconnaissance activities, shells populated areas from the territory of the Russian Federation, and increases the density of mine-explosive barriers along the state border of Ukraine. The enemy carried out aerial strikes in the areas of Mala Vovchi and Orimivka in the Kharkiv region.

Over 25 populated areas, including Leonivka in the Chernihiv region; Znob-Trubchevska, Seredyna-Buda, Bachivske in the Sumy region; Kozacha Lopan, Vovchansk, Budarky in the Kharkiv region, experienced artillery and mortar shelling.

In the Kupiansk direction, Ukrainian defenders repelled seven enemy attacks near Synkivka and east of Petropavlivka in the Kharkiv region, where the enemy, with aviation support, unsuccessfully attempted to break through our troops' defense. The adversary also conducted aerial strikes near Kucheriivka and Cherneshchyna in the Kharkiv region. Approximately 10 populated areas, including Synkivka, Petropavlivka, Ivanivka, and Berestove in the Kharkiv region, came under artillery and mortar fire.

In the Lyman direction, the enemy did not engage in offensive actions. They delivered aerial strikes in the areas of Serebrianske Forestry in the Luhansk region and Terniv, Spirne in the Donetsk region. Over 10 populated areas, including Nevske, Bilohorivka in the Luhansk region, and Serebrianka, Spirne, and Rozdolivka in the Donetsk region, suffered from enemy artillery and mortar shelling.

In the Bakhmut direction, Defense Forces repelled 10 enemy attacks near Bohdanivka, Klishchiivka, and Andriivka in the Donetsk region. Over 10 populated areas, including Hryhorivka, Bohdanivka, Ivanivske, Klishchiivka, and Andriivka in the Donetsk region, came under artillery and mortar fire.

In the Avdiivka direction, our defenders repelled four enemy attacks in the areas of Novobakhmutivka, Stepove, and Avdiivka, and another 14 attacks near Pervomaiske and Nevelske in the Donetsk region. Here, the enemy, with aviation support, unsuccessfully attempted to improve tactical positions. Approximately 10 populated areas, including Berdychiv, Stepove, Avdiivka, Severne, and Pervomaiske in the Donetsk region, experienced artillery and mortar shelling.

In the Maryinka direction, the enemy did not engage in offensive (assault) actions. They delivered aerial strikes in the areas of Maryinka and Novomykhailivka in the Donetsk region. The artillery and mortar shelling targeted populated areas in the Donetsk region, such as Heorhiivka, Pobieda, Novomykhailivka, and Kostiantynivka.

In the Shakhtarsk direction, the enemy did not engage in offensive (assault) actions. They delivered aerial strikes in the areas of Staryi Maiorsk and Velyka Novosilka in the Donetsk region. Approximately 10 populated areas, including Vuhledar, Prechystivka, Zolota Niva, and Urozhaine in the Donetsk region, came under artillery and mortar fire.

In the area of responsibility of the OSA Odesa in the Kherson direction, enemy artillery shelling targeted Novokahira, Veletenske, and Kherson in the Kherson region.

The advancement of the Ukrainian Armed Forces

The enemy does not abandon the intention to dislodge our units from the bridgeheads on the left bank of the Dnipro.

During the day, the enemy conducted 18 unsuccessful assault actions, but Ukrainian forces kept holding their positions and inflicted significant losses on the enemy.

Enemy losses

During the day, the aviation of the Defense Forces struck 13 areas of concentration of enemy personnel. Additionally, one guided aviation missile X-59 was destroyed by air defense.

Units of the missile forces targeted the area of concentration of enemy personnel, weapons, and military equipment, destroying six artillery systems, three air defense assets, and an enemy command post.
