Russia is preparing for the parade in such a way that Moscow residents will be without mobile internet on May 9, a fact officially confirmed by Russian officials, according to the Russian Ministry of Digital Development.
On May 9, access to mobile internet will be restricted in Moscow. Even the so-called whitelist of websites, that is, those sites that are typically accessible even during blockades, will be subject to these restrictions. SMS messaging services will also be unavailable.
The Ministry explains the decision as necessary to ensure the security of the May 9 holiday events.
When restrictions begin
There will be no restrictions on May 7 and 8, the Russian Ministry of Digital Development assures. The shutdown allegedly applies exclusively to the day of the parade, May 9.
However, restrictions began as early as May 5. Specifically, these included the blocking of mobile communications, SMS messaging, and issues with the operation of online services.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy mocked the internet shutdown in Moscow, calling it a telling sign of what festive Russia is really like.
In a number of regions across the country, the celebrations for May 9 have already been canceled altogether due to security concerns.
