Russia to relocate some residents of Kursk region to occupied areas of Ukraine
The Russian authorities will evacuate some residents of the Kursk region to the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, to Zaporizhzhia region, according to the acting governor of the Kursk region Alexei Smirnov.
According to the official, he held talks with the governor of the occupied part of Zaporizhzhia region, Yevhen Balytskyi.
"We discussed the current situation in the Kursk region and possible measures to improve the safety of our citizens," Smirnov wrote.
He clarified that Balytskyi proposed to accommodate residents of the border areas of Kursk region in sanatoriums and boarding houses on the shores of the Azov Sea, located on the occupied territory from Berdyansk to Kyrylivka.
"In the near future, the first routes to transport people to temporary accommodation points in the Zaporizhzhia region will be organized," the governor added.
What happened before
Active fighting has been going on in the Kursk region for over a week. Russia has officially recognized that it has lost control of 28 settlements, but the actual number may be much higher.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy officially confirmed the operation in the Kursk region only yesterday, August 12.
In turn, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, said that Ukrainian defenders now control about 1,000 square kilometers of Russian territory.
