Russia targets railway links to isolate Sumy and Chernihiv regions

Russian forces are striking railway infrastructure in an attempt to cut off connections with Sumy and Chernihiv regions, according to Ukrzaliznytsia board chairman Oleksandr Pertsovskyi.
"The enemy continues to launch strikes aimed at severing connections with the frontline territories, particularly Sumy and Chernihiv regions. They strike to block the main routes and are also trying to block the reserve ones," Pertsovskyi noted.
He added that passengers on trains heading to Sumy, Konotop, Shostka, and other cities in the region will be transported by bus transfers at a safe distance from the strike sites.
Ukrzaliznytsia is also working with the regional military administrations of Sumy and Chernihiv, as well as with the mayors of Konotop, Shostka, and Nizhyn, to quickly organize transfers. “Thank you for the promptness and involvement,” he added.
Russian strikes on railways
On Monday, October 6, Ukrzaliznytsia canceled several suburban trains in the Sumy region due to a massive shelling attack, after the enemy deliberately targeted the Shostka–Kyiv passenger train with drones.
At night on October 8, Russian forces launched drone strikes on the Chernihiv region, with the main attacks hitting Nizhyn, Pryluky, and the Semenivka community.
As a result of the attack on the railway infrastructure near Nizhyn, the track was damaged, train traffic to Kyiv was stopped, and a fire broke out at a Ukrzaliznytsia warehouse. An energy facility was also damaged, leaving part of the city without power.
In Pryluky, a drone struck an oil depot, and in Semenivka, it hit an administrative building. Overall, the region suffered around 50 attacks, affecting 23 settlements. There were injured civilians — among them a woman aged 44 and 70 and a 56-year-old man.
Due to Russian strikes on the Nizhyn railway line, train traffic was significantly disrupted.
As a result, several trains were forced to operate on altered routes, while some services experienced delays or temporary cancellations.
