Russia strikes Ukraine with 55 drones overnight: Air defense's work reported
On the night of January 16, Russians launched 55 Shahed attack drones and various types of imitators against Ukraine. Ukrainian air defense managed to destroy 34 of them, according to the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The drones were launched from the directions of the Russian cities of Millerovo, Orel, Bryansk, and Primorsko-Akhtarsk.
The attack was repelled by:
- aviation;
- anti-aircraft missile troops;
- electronic warfare (EW) units;
- mobile fire groups of the Air Force and the Defense Forces of Ukraine.
As of 9 a.m. Kyiv time, 34 drones have been confirmed downed in Kyiv, Poltava, Cherkasy, Sumy, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, and several other regions.
Several drones hit a farm in the Cherkasy region. In particular, drone debris damaged private homes in Kharkiv and Poltava regions.
Another 18 Russian imitator drones were lost locally without any negative consequences.
Russian strike on Ukraine
Since the beginning of Russia's large-scale invasion, massive enemy shelling has become a regular threat to civilians. Also in 2024, 13 large-scale attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure were recorded, leading to both emergency and planned power outages.
On January 15 this year, Russian forces launched a large-scale attack on Ukraine with 117 air targets. Ukraine's air defense forces destroyed 77 of them.
