Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andrii Sybiha thanked his European colleagues for not giving in to Russia’s threats, according to his post.
What Sybiha said
The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized: Moscow is trying to intimidate Ukraine’s partners, but these methods are no longer working.
Sybiha stated that maybe such intimidation worked many years ago. But not anymore.
Why this matters
Earlier, Russia threatened to strike Kyiv. European countries and the US Embassy publicly rejected these threats and confirmed that their representatives would remain in the Ukrainian capital.
The background to these statements is Russia’s massive strike on Kyiv and the surrounding region, which occurred on Sunday. Four people were killed, and over a hundred were injured.
Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs had announced in advance the start of a series of targeted strikes on facilities in Kyiv. At the same time, the Kremlin called on foreign diplomats to leave the Ukrainian capital as soon as possible.
However, the threats did not work. France, Germany, and the EU summoned Russian ambassadors for explanations, but refused to evacuate their diplomats. The issue of strikes on Kyiv also came up in talks between Lavrov and US Secretary of State Rubio, with Moscow attempting to exert pressure there as well.
