Russia’s overnight attacks on Ukraine and how air defenses fought back

Russia attacked Ukraine on the night of August 3 with 76 drones and 7 missiles. Despite most targets being intercepted by air defense, some strikes still hit their marks, according to the Ukrainian Air Forces on Telegram.
The attack included:
- 76 Shahed drones and various decoy UAVs launched from Shatalovo, Kursk, and Millerovo
- 1 Iskander-M ballistic missile from Bryansk region
- 5 S-300/S-400 surface-to-air missiles from Kursk region
- 1 Kh-22 cruise missile launched over the Black Sea
The assault was repelled by Ukrainian aviation, missile defense units, electronic warfare teams, drone units, and mobile fire groups.
Air defense systems shot down 61 airborne targets — including 60 drones across northern, southern, eastern, and central Ukraine, as well as an Iskander-M ballistic missile.
The Ukrainian Air Forces reported, "There were confirmed hits by six missiles and 16 drones at eight locations, with debris from downed targets falling in two locations."
Impact of the Russian attack
On the evening of August 2, Russia launched a missile strike on Mykolaiv. By morning, three private homes were destroyed, and fires broke out. Additionally, 23 houses, 12 apartment buildings, six cars, a post office branch, and a building materials store were damaged.
The number of injured from the Mykolaiv missile strike rose to seven.
The occupiers also attacked Balaklia and Chuhuiv in Kharkiv region overnight, causing casualties.
