Drones from the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) and the Ukrainian Defense Forces have hit Russia's largest explosives manufacturing plant, located 900 km from the Ukrainian border, according to RBC-Ukraine's sources.

"Last night, SSU, Special Operations Forces (SSO), and the Main Intelligence Directorate (DIU) drones struck the Sverdlov Plant in Dzerzhinsk, Nizhny Novgorod region. It is a key component of Russia’s military-industrial complex," the report says.

According to Ukrainian intelligence sources, the target was attacked by several dozen Ukrainian-made strike drones. The plant is located approximately 900 kilometers from Ukraine’s state border.

The enterprise is under sanctions by the EU and the US because the plant's products are used in Russia's war effort against Ukraine.

"SSU has been working on strengthening sanctions against the Sverdlov Plant. In addition to economic sanctions, we have added drone strikes, which have an immediate effect. The effort to weaken the enemy’s military capabilities will continue," an informed source from the SSU said.

What is known about this plant?

The Sverdlov Plant specializes in explosives production and has been placed on Ukraine’s sanctions list "for supporting actions that undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence of Ukraine."

On June 23, 2023, the plant was added to the EU sanctions list. It is also under sanctions from the US, the UK, Japan, and Switzerland.

The plant is one of the largest producers of industrial explosives in Russia. It manufactures transfer charges for the mining industry, perforating charges for the oil and gas sector, and equipment for seismic and geophysical work.

The enterprise also produces aerial bombs, including KABs (guided aerial bombs), warheads for anti-tank cumulative guided missiles, and warheads for air defense missile systems.

Drone attack on the plant: What happened earlier

On October 20, explosions were heard in Dzerzhinsk, Nizhny Novgorod region (Russia), reportedly involving air defense activity.

Drones attacked the Sverdlov Plant, which is part of Russia's military-industrial complex. According to Russian Telegram channels, the explosions near the plant occurred around 4:00 a.m.

Soon after, local authorities reported an attempt by Russian air defenses to repel the drone kamikaze attack. Following the explosions, a thick column of smoke was seen over the facility.
