A Russian citizen will return to Russia in exchange for the release of American teacher Marc Fogel. The man had previously been imprisoned in the United States, according to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov.

"As we have previously reported, work along the relevant channels was intensified in recent times, contacts were made, and as a result of these contacts, Fogel was released, along with a Russian citizen currently held in a US prison," Peskov said.

According to him, the Russian national will be released "in the coming days," though the Kremlin spokesman did not disclose his name.

Peskov added that such agreements "are unlikely to be a turning point but, piece by piece, they represent certain steps toward rebuilding mutual trust, which is currently at its lowest point."

Prisoner swap between the US and Russia

On Tuesday, February 11, Russia released American teacher Marc Fogel from prison.

Following the exchange, US President Donald Trump expressed hope that Moscow’s release of an American citizen would mark "the beginning of relations" that could help bring an end to the war in Ukraine.
