Russia will attempt to re-elect itself to the United Nations Human Rights Council through a secret ballot next week, according to Reuters.

Some diplomats, in conversations with the publication, noted that Russia has a chance to return to the United Nations Human Rights Council against the backdrop of "Ukraine fatigue."

"I think there is Ukraine fatigue. And second, many people do not want U.N. bodies to be dominated by Western voices, not to mention overbearing attitudes," said one of the high-ranking Asian diplomats.

To achieve this, Russia actively engages the votes of African, Asian, and other non-Western countries in the UN General Assembly, consisting of 193 members, labeling the positions of the US and their allies as "prejudice" and "hypocrisy."

Critics of Russia argue that such re-election would undermine trust in the Human Rights Council, which is one of the most effective UN bodies.

Russia wants to return to the UN Human Rights Council

At the end of September, the BBC reported that Russia aims to rejoin the UN Human Rights Council in upcoming elections. It was excluded from there last year following the start of the war against Ukraine.

The edition obtained a copy of the document outlining Russia's position, which it is circulating among UN members, seeking their support. In it, Russia promises to find "adequate solutions to human rights issues" and strives to prevent the Council from becoming a "tool serving the political will of one group of countries."

The US State Department has stated that Russia's representation in the UN Human Rights Council does not align with its actions in Ukraine.
