Ukraine has called on its partners to take decisive action in response to Russia's overnight ballistic missile attack on Kyiv, which killed numerous civilians, including an entire family, according to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.
"This was a horrific night in Kyiv. Over 20 ballistic missiles. At least 11 killed and dozens injured, including children. Protect Ukrainian children from Russian ballistic terror! No task is more urgent. This is our main message to the NATO summit this week," he wrote.
The minister said that rescue operations are still underway and added that the death toll is likely to rise.
"In one of the districts, an entire killed family has been taken out of the rubble: mother, father, and child," he said.
The end of the era of "soft measures"
Sybiha stressed that this week's NATO summit must become a platform for concrete action. He said the era of "soft measures" has come to an end because such measures only encourage Russia to continue its campaign of terror and expand it beyond Ukraine.
"Putin’s message to Ankara is simple: he is going to point ballistic missiles at sleeping children and continue the murder as long as he can," the minister said.
The foreign minister noted that PAC-3 interceptor missiles were designed specifically to protect people from this kind of barbarity. According to him, thousands of these missiles are stored around the world to respond to potential threats.
"But the threats in Ukraine are not potential! Russian missiles are killing people every week. Ukraine is currently the only country in the world facing ballistic attacks every single week. The means of protection from this terror need to be here. And we need all decisions on air defense now, not later. Because for us, the time is measured in human lives," Sybiha wrote.
What is known about the July 6 attack on Kyiv
As previously reported, Kyiv's Podilskyi and Darnytskyi districts sustained the heaviest damage from the Russian strike. Meanwhile, residents are being evacuated in the town of Vyshneve due to the risk of a secondary explosion.
It is worth noting that during the overnight attack, Ukraine's air defenses failed to intercept a single ballistic missile because of a shortage of interceptor missiles for Patriot air defense systems.
Meanwhile, Russia's Defense Ministry traditionally claimed that the strike targeted only military facilities. In reality, however, Russian missiles hit residential areas. At least 14 people were killed in the attack.
