Russia is not ready for peace, Zelenskyy urges Rubio and Vance to increase pressure

Today in Rome, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a meeting with US Vice President JD Vance and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The parties discussed Istanbul, pressure on Russia, and other matters, according to the Telegram channel of the Ukrainian President.
"During our talks, we discussed negotiations in Istanbul to where the Russians sent a low-level delegation of non-decision-makers. I reaffirmed that Ukraine is ready to be engaged in real diplomacy and underscored the importance of a full and unconditional ceasefire as soon as possible," Zelenskyy said.
Ukrainian President added that the parties also touched on the need for sanctions against Russia, bilateral trade, defense cooperation, the situation on the battlefield, and the future exchange of prisoners.
"Pressure is needed against Russia until they are eager to stop the war. And, of course, we talked about our joint steps to achieve a just and durable peace," Zelenskyy noted.
In addition, the President of Ukraine expressed gratitude to the United States.
"Thank you to all American people for the support and leadership in saving lives," Zelenskyy concluded.
Negotiations in Istanbul and threat of new sanctions against Russia
On May 16 in Istanbul, negotiations took place between Ukraine and Russia regarding the cessation of the war. Following the negotiations, the parties agreed on a prisoner exchange of 1,000 for 1,000, as well as on a subsequent meeting, which is most likely to be held in June.
The reports indicate that at the upcoming negotiations, each side will present its vision for a ceasefire. Yesterday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that both Russia and Ukraine will prepare the respective documents.
Rubio also stated that Washington had given Moscow time to make progress in the peace talks. However, patience is running out, and a decision on sanctions is already underway.
