Russia intensifies airstrikes on Sumy region despite ceasefire, one killed victim

Russia intensified its shelling of the Sumy region on the morning of May 8, despite Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin declaring a ceasefire for May 9, the Ukrainian Air Force and the State Emergency Service in the Sumy region report.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, throughout the night and into May 8, the enemy stepped up airstrikes using tactical aviation and guided aerial bombs on the Sumy region.
In particular, on the morning of May 8, Russian forces carried out airstrikes on the territory of the Bilopillia community.
"Emergency service specialists arrived at the scene. During a search of the area, rescuers found a woman trapped under the rubble. She was carefully freed and handed over to emergency medical personnel," the State Emergency Service reported.
In the Sumy district, night shelling caused fires in three residential buildings.
"Rescuers worked at the scene from night until morning. Unfortunately, as a result of the incident, one civilian lost their life," the agency stated.
One residential home was completely destroyed, and three more civilian homes along with seven outbuildings were damaged.
Number of Russian UAVs launched on the evening of May 7 and how many destroyed
Between 2:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Kyiv time on May 7 (during the third wave of attacks that day), the enemy launched 31 strike UAVs and decoy drones of various types from the Millerovo area (Russia).
"Confirmed: 20 Shahed-type strike UAVs (and other types) were shot down in the northern and central regions of Ukraine. Six enemy decoy drones were lost from radar without negative consequences," the Ukrainian Air Force stated.
As of 8:00 a.m. Kyiv time on May 8, no missile strikes or use of drones were recorded in Ukraine's airspace.
Ceasefire on May 9
At midnight on May 8, Russia announced the start of a ceasefire with Ukraine for three days, as previously declared by Vladimir Putin.
Putin had earlier declared a temporary truce supposedly "for humanitarian purposes", from May 8 to 11.
This is not the first ceasefire declared by Putin that Russian forces have violated. For example, on April 19, the Russian President announced an Easter ceasefire, which was also broken.
