Russia has deployed a network of secret bases with new launch sites for modern long-range drones capable of reaching NATO countries. Some of these bases are already being used for strikes against Ukraine, according to an investigation by The Telegraph.
Journalists, drawing on documents and satellite imagery, have identified at least 10 Russian bases where new launch sites have been set up.
In total, at least 59 new launch rails were recorded along Russia's border with Belarus and Ukraine.
According to the article, some drone command centers were converted from military bases and civilian airports. Other launch sites were set up in rural areas.
Analysis of satellite imagery by DroneSec showed that about 20 of the new rails are likely of extended length. This may indicate their capability to launch Russia's newest long-range strike drones.
Russia may be creating a threat to NATO
The Telegraph notes that the new network of bases poses a long-term threat to NATO countries. Some of them are positioned so that modern Russian drones could potentially reach Warsaw.
At the same time, the publication emphasizes that there is no evidence that Russia is planning an attack on Poland.
According to the media, US and European intelligence officials believe that Moscow may be considering provocations on Polish territory, including attacks on critical infrastructure or false-flag operations for which they would attempt to blame Ukraine.
A NATO official told the publication that the Alliance is ready to defend every inch of allied territory and continues to enhance readiness to counter drone threats.
Russia increasing the number of new drones
The investigation notes that satellite imagery shows a significant increase in the number of modern Russian drones. One base has enough space to store more than 1,000 drones simultaneously.
Construction of additional launch facilities is also ongoing at several key sites.
Russia's newest Geran-4 and Geran-5 drones are capable of reaching speeds sufficient to evade air defense systems and carry payloads of up to 90 kg.
According to DroneSec founder Mike Monnik, Russia has significantly expanded its drone network to use it against Ukraine and create a threat to NATO countries.
Yesterday, Russian propagandists aired a segment on the use of the BM-35 strike drone with a jet engine, capable of reaching speeds of over 350 km/h and flying a distance of more than 200 km.
Last month, an expert explained to RBC-Ukraine how the Armed Forces of Ukraine will destroy jet-powered Shahed drones in the future.
