Fighting in the Kursk region
The Ukrainian Defense Forces began the Kursk operation on August 6. Ukrainian troops managed to take control of over a hundred settlements in the border areas of Russia, establishing a buffer zone there.
According to Ukrainian command, this was a preventive measure to stop Russia's advance in northern Ukraine.
As early as February, Russian forces intensified their offensive to push the Ukrainian army out of the Kursk region. The situation escalated in March. Russia claimed to have encircled Ukrainian troops, but the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy refuted this information.
At the same time, Zelenskyy reported that Russia was amassing troops near Ukraine's eastern border. According to him, this indicates a potential strike on the Sumy region.
