In 2025, Russian troops used dangerous chemicals against the Armed Forces of Ukraine 6,540 times. The highest number of attacks was recorded in April - 894 cases, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
During the entire period of Russia's war against Ukraine, almost 12,000 cases of the use of dangerous chemicals have been documented.
In addition to traditional weapons, the enemy actively used K-51 and RG-VO gas grenades equipped with CS and CN chemicals, which are irritants used by law enforcement agencies in peacetime to control riots.
In military conditions, the use of such substances is prohibited by international law, in particular under the 1993 Chemical Weapons Convention.
“The use of CS and CN as weapons on the battlefield is aimed at temporarily incapacitating military personnel, violates international law, and poses a direct threat to the life and health of personnel,” the General Staff said.
They explained that these substances cause severe irritation of the mucous membranes, lacrimation, suffocation, coughing, disorientation, and temporary loss of combat capability.
In total, 6,540 cases of the use of hazardous chemicals were recorded in 2025.
The highest number of such chemical attacks was recorded in April 2025 - 894 cases.
The radiation, chemical, and biological protection units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine systematically record the use of hazardous substances, and the samples taken are sent for forensic analysis.
Russians use chemical weapons
The Russian army systematically uses prohibited chemical weapons against Ukrainian soldiers on the front lines.
In a talk intercepted by Ukrainian intelligence, the commander of the Russian forces orders an attack on the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine with chemical substances prohibited by humanitarian law.
In June, Russian troops had been actively using chemical weapons in the Siversk direction for the third week in a row.
There were also reports of the use of chemical weapons in the Bakhmut area.
The EU Council has prepared new sanctions regulations in which Russia is officially accused for the first time of using CS tear gas on the front lines in Ukraine as a method of warfare.
