Rubio discusses Trump's peace plan with Russia's Lavrov during call on Ukraine war

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a phone conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. During the call, Rubio delivered a message from US President Donald Trump.
During the conversation with Lavrov, the US Secretary of State welcomed the prisoner exchange agreement reached in talks between Ukraine and Russia on May 16 in Istanbul.
Rubio also conveyed a clear message from President Trump.
"The United States is committed to achieving a lasting end to the Russia-Ukraine war. The comprehensive peace plan proposed by the United States outlines the best way forward," Rubio emphasized.
The Secretary also stressed President Trump's call for an immediate ceasefire and an end to violence.
US-Russia talks
Earlier today, Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs also confirmed that Lavrov spoke with Rubio. However, they did not mention the peace plan during the call.

After the conversation, US President Donald Trump announced a series of important phone calls. He said he plans to speak with the presidents of Russia and Ukraine on Monday, May 19.

Talks in Istanbul
On May 16, Ukrainian and Russian delegations met in Istanbul. They spent more than an hour discussing ways to end the war in Ukraine.
