US Secretary of State Marco Rubio congratulated Ukraine on the 35th anniversary of its independence and reaffirmed Washington's commitment to Ukrainian sovereignty - the statement was published by the US Department of State.

What Rubio said

In a message published on the US State Department's website, the diplomat said Washington was using the occasion to reaffirm the strong partnership between the two countries.

"The United States is committed to Ukraine’s sovereignty and continues to work to support a negotiated settlement to the Russia-Ukraine war that establishes a lasting and durable peace.," Rubio said.

Support for peace and security

According to the secretary of state, Ukrainians are marking their country's history on Independence Day while demonstrating courage, innovation and resilience.

He added that the US was once again underscoring its "strong commitment to advancing our economic and security ties and forging a path towards peace and prosperity for both of our nations."

Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham arrived in Kyiv on his first foreign trip since taking office.
