US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a phone call today, May 5, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry’s press service.
"The foreign ministers compared notes on the current situation in international affairs and US-Russia relations," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
The officials also discussed the schedule of bilateral contacts.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said the conversation was constructive and businesslike.
Putin–Trump call
Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump held a phone call.
The main topic of discussion was the situation in the Middle East. They also touched on efforts to resolve Russia’s war against Ukraine.
The Kremlin leader said he was ready to establish a ceasefire with Ukraine during the Victory Day celebrations.
Earlier this week, Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed the corresponding decree by Putin. According to the Kremlin’s plan, the ceasefire is expected to take place on May 8–9.
At the same time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy put forward his own proposal. He called for a ceasefire with Russia to begin on the night of May 6.
According to him, such a step is necessary to save lives, not to mark Victory Day.
