At the end of summer, when the heat gradually subsides, roses often look tired and weak. Intense sunlight in the previous months can compact the soil, turning it into a hard crust. As a result, the plants’ roots may not get enough water and nutrients.

Express shares methods to help the bushes recover, prepare for autumn, and even produce larger buds; you don’t need expensive fertilizers.

Why coffee grounds can work wonders for roses

The secret of coffee grounds lies not so much in their direct effect on the plant, but in attracting the right “helpers.”

Soil aeration: Coffee grounds are a favorite food for earthworms. When you scatter them over a flower bed, worms may burrow deeper into the soil, helping loosen compacted earth. This can improve drainage and allow more water to reach the rose roots.

Natural fertilizer: Worm castings are rich in nutrients that can benefit plants. Coffee grounds also contain nitrogen, which supports leafy growth and strong stems.

Pest protection: While earthworms are attracted to coffee grounds, slugs may be deterred by their strong scent, although the effectiveness of coffee grounds as a slug repellent can vary.

How to use the method correctly: Step-by-step instructions

To avoid harming your plants, follow a few simple rules:

Dry the grounds first. Never spread wet grounds straight from the coffee maker. Spread them on a tray or baking sheet and let them dry completely. Otherwise, they can develop mold in the flower bed.

Use only used coffee grounds. Fresh coffee grounds can be more acidic. Brewing removes much of the soluble material, making used grounds a gentler option for garden use.

Use the right amount. Spread approximately 200 to 250 grams of dry grounds around each bush.

Do not dig them into the soil. Avoid disturbing the soil with a hoe or small shovel, as this could damage the roses’ surface roots. Simply scatter the grounds on top.

Water thoroughly. Immediately after applying the grounds, pour around 7 to 8 liters of water around each bush. This will help move nutrients into the soil.

The procedure only needs to be carried out once at the end of summer. It can help roses recover their strength, bloom more abundantly and prepare for winter.
