Response to Trump’s tariffs: Hongkong Post stops shipping goods to US

Hong Kong suspends postal shipments to the US, following Beijing's lead in response to actions taken by Donald Trump amid the ongoing trade war, according to Bloomberg and CNN.
According to reports, Hongkong Post will suspend the acceptance of surface mail containing goods destined for the US starting today, while a halt on airmail shipments will take effect from April 27. At the same time, CNN notes that the suspension applies not only to parcels sent to the US, but also to those arriving from America. However, shipments containing only documents will not be affected by the restrictions.
“The US is unreasonable, bullying and imposing tariffs abusively. Hongkong Post will definitely not collect any so-called tariffs on behalf of the US,” the statement reads.
The move comes at a time when President Trump’s tariff offensive on China increasingly impacts the former British colony, which typically benefits from favorable trade relations due to its semi-autonomous status. Yesterday, Hong Kong leader John Lee sharply criticized US measures, accusing Washington of senselessly suppressing both the city and the country.
Earlier, the US government announced that starting May 2, it would end the duty-free status for mail shipments from China, including Hong Kong. This measure will close a loophole for goods worth less than $800, potentially hitting markets such as Temu and Shein.
Bloomberg added that Hong Kong has found itself caught in the crossfire of Trump’s tariff policy. Although the city operates as a free port and does not impose import duties, local goods are now not exempt from US tariffs, unlike during Trump’s first term.
Conflict over tariffs against China
The conflict over tariffs against China is intensifying. According to The New York Times, officials within the White House are divided over the issue of the trade war with China, and there is no unified stance on the matter.
