Following the election defeat, Republicans and political consultants have urged US President Donald Trump to rethink his approach to governing the country, according to Reuters.
Trump is now facing calls to revamp his White House team, strengthen discipline, and abandon policies that contributed to the poor election results. These include the war with Iran and the introduction of tariffs.
Republican strategist John Feehery described the election outcome as a "massive disaster" for the US president.
"He needs to clean house. Every day from this point forward, he's becoming more and more lame," Feehery said.
Meanwhile, Reuters reports that Democrats taking control of Congress will significantly limit Trump's ability to govern. In particular, they will be able to block his legislative proposals, launch investigations into his administration, and obstruct the confirmation of government nominees.
" That is expected to push Trump, who has already used executive authority aggressively, toward an even greater reliance on unilateral action," the report said.
A senior US administration official said the White House is already anticipating the departure of some staff members, possible Cabinet changes, and investigations by Democrats.
"It absolutely sucks to be here right now. Morale is as low as it can get," the official said.
However, Republicans' dissatisfaction was not limited to foreign policy. According to a Republican political consultant, voters had already been criticizing Trump over the summer for focusing on building a ballroom at the White House and renovating government buildings in Washington.
"If Trump spends the next two years talking about this same shit, we will get shellacked again in the next election," the consultant predicted.
Earlier, RBC-Ukraine reported that the US president had revealed what he considered the main reason behind the Republicans' election defeat.
The White House also claimed that Democrats would not be able to "undo Trump's achievements."
