US businessman and billionaire Elon Musk has announced the formation of his political party, which will stand in opposition to the Republican Party of current President Donald Trump, according to Musk’s post on the social media platform X.

On Friday, July 4, the businessman held an online poll on his page about the need to create a political force called the "American Party."

"Independence Day is the perfect time to ask if you want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system?" Musk wrote in the post, referring to the Republican Party.

According to the poll results, 65.4% supported the creation of such a party, while 34.6% voted against it.

Musk later commented on the results of the poll.

"By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it! When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom," the businessman wrote.

Musk-Trump conflict

In June, Elon Musk harshly criticized President Donald Trump’s tax and budget policy bill, calling it a form of "debt slavery." According to Musk, the legislation would only accelerate the growth of the US national debt.

Nevertheless, both chambers of Congress passed the bill following intense negotiations between the White House and Republican lawmakers.

On July 4, Trump signed the bill during a public Independence Day ceremony.

Earlier in June, Musk denounced Trump’s initiative as "disgusting," accused him of ingratitude, and emphasized that without his financial support, Trump wouldn’t have won the election. In response, Trump called the businessman "insane."

Following the escalation, Trump publicly stated that one of the most effective ways to reduce government spending would be to cut all cooperation with Musk’s companies.

After the heated exchange, Musk softened his stance on June 11, admitting he had "gone too far" in criticizing the president. The next day, he further toned down his public statements after a series of conversations with top officials.

However, in early July, Musk resumed his criticism of Trump and his team.

In particular, the businessman vowed to launch a political party if the budget bill was passed.

In response, President Trump threatened to deport the billionaire "back home to South Africa."
