Staying active and moving throughout the day is important at any age, but especially after 50, when regular physical exercise becomes key to preventing sarcopenia and maintaining bone health. Walking is one of the best exercises for people over 50.

How many steps should people aged 50+ walk daily
While 10,000 steps are often promoted as the ideal number for health and well-being, it turns out that you don't need to reach that amount daily.
A study conducted by Brigham and Women's Hospital found that walking just 4,400 steps a day is associated with significant health benefits and a lower risk of death.
The risk continues to decrease with more steps, peaking at 7,500 steps per day.
"Taking 10,000 steps a day can sound daunting. But we find that even a modest increase in steps taken is tied to significantly lower mortality in older women. Our study adds to a growing understanding of the importance of physical activity for health, clarifies the number of steps related to lower mortality and amplifies the message: Step more -- even a little more is helpful," said I-Min Lee, MBBS, ScD, an epidemiologist in the Division of Preventive Medicine at the Brigham.
Physical exercise is not only important for short-term physical health. Studies show that people living in blue zones (areas with long-living populations) stay active throughout the day. Even a brisk one-hour walk can make a difference.
Walking is crucial. For example, choose a café or restaurant fifteen minutes away from your workplace and make sure to walk there twice a day. This can also be achieved on weekends by walking instead of driving.
